LIC was proud to welcome more than 140 breeders to our annual Breeders’ Day celebration on 28 May, recognising the incredible contribution they make to driving genetic progress across New Zealand’s national herd.

Speaking at the event, LIC Chair Corrigan Sowman reflected on the enduring impact breeders have on the dairy sector, both for today’s farmers and future generations:

“LIC’s breeding programmes are continually evolving to stay aligned with what farmers need now, and what they’ll need in the future. That progress is made possible through the long-term decisions and investment of our breeders, and as a co-op we’re proud to connect that directly with farmers right across the country.”

The day included a tour of the Newstead bull farm and testing facilities, followed by a bull parade in the Bull Barn, where semen collection takes place year-round. Breeders also heard more about LIC’s latest research and development work, and the future-focused breeding programmes helping shape the next generation of dairy genetics.

The celebrations concluded with an awards dinner at Claudelands Events Centre in Hamilton, featuring a keynote from Waikato farmer and former New Zealand Māori rugby leagure captain, Tawera Nikau. Tawera joined us to share an inspiring message about striving to be the best at what you do, overcoming barriers, setting goals, and recognising the important role farming plays in shaping strong futures and resilient communities.

The awards ceremony began with the presentation of the SPS Farmer of the Year award, won by Peter and Sandi Thompson

Based in Ngatea, Peter and Sandi run a 400-cow operation, on 135-hectares and have been part of LIC’s SPS programme for 11 years.

LIC Sire Proving Scheme Manager Ann Scott says: “Since 2015, Peter and Sandi have reared more than 753 SPS calves and milked 635 SPS daughters. With every female DNA tested and genomically profiled, and 98% ancestry recorded, they have shown an outstanding level of commitment to SPS. Their achievements are a great example of what’s possible through the scheme.”
