Hi, I'm Jessica.
In 2024 I graduated from the University of Otago with a Bachelor of Commerce and Science, majoring in Accounting and Genetics.
Wanting to further my studies in agricultural genetics, I moved up to Palmerston North to pursue a Masters in Animal Science at Massey University, specialising in animal genetics and breeding.
Growing up on a small beef farm in Southland, I was immersed in a farming community and gained firsthand exposure to both the challenges and opportunities within the sector.
During my undergraduate studies I developed a strong interest in livestock genetics and could see it is an avenue to combine my passions for both science and finance. This interest led me to undertake two Callaghan-funded summer internships, including one with LIC where I had the opportunity to undertake a project evaluating SLICK-coat phenotypes in New Zealand dairy cattle.
Through connecting with professionals in the livestock breeding industry, I came to appreciate the value of postgraduate qualifications in this highly technical field. Pursuing a Masters degree is a key step toward my goal of contributing to the livestock breeding sector by enhancing productivity and profitability for farmers through more informed breeding decisions. My research project focuses on understanding the required levels of genetic connectedness for flocks to be incorporated into evaluations within a dispersed progeny test programme.
Receiving the Brian Aspin Memorial scholarship has provided invaluable financial support, allowing me to fully dedicate myself to my studies. It will also enable me to take advantage of professional development opportunities such as attending conferences to further expand my knowledge and network within the field.
