Top 5 MINDA calving features

Check out the top 5 MINDA features that can help lighten the load during calving.

Calving is always one of the busiest and most important times on-farm each year. MINDA LIVE and the app make it easy to record what’s happening on-farm and provide the valuable data you need to make informed herd management decisions.

For those that prefer paper-in-hand, there are two reports handy to use leading up to and during the calving period.

The‘Expected Calving by Date’ report provides a summary of which cows are due to calve in chronological order, identifying potential big days that will influence your grazing, staffing and feeding decisions. During your calving period, it’s also a useful guide to follow up on outstanding information.

The ‘Expected Calving by Cow’ report helps identify which of your cows are due, who they’re expected to calve to and the potential indices of the calves. It also provides an indication of which animals are expected to calve to short gestation or sexed semen matings, making it easy to make herd improvement decisions when it comes to who you should keep and who you could consider selling.

Recording calvings in the app will save you time as you can record the calving straight away, while you’re in the paddock – there’s no need to write down the details and wait until you’re home to enter them in MINDA. It’s intuitive and easy to use for recording all calving details including the date, fate, sex and ID of the calf.

Make sure to check your Holding Pen in the app or MINDA LIVE to approve the calvings you’ve recorded and ensure there are no issues holding these up.

If you have a number of similar calvings to record, save time by using the “ditto” option in MINDA LIVE.

This replicates the calving data you just entered, so you don’t have to re-enter the same data for every calving.

If you use LIC as your NAIT Information Provider, there’s a new section in the Event Recorder tab of MINDA LIVE and a new tile in the app called ‘NAIT Only’. This feature helps you stay NAIT compliant as you can register, remove or transfer animals that aren’t recorded in your MINDA herd records, such as feeder calves.

Post Calving Reports

Once you’ve made it through calving and have some time to review your data, run a ‘Calves Reared’ report in MINDA LIVE. This will show you all the animals you’ve recorded as ‘reared’ in your MINDA records. Having this report will help you identify calves that are missing a sire, calves you have kept from non-artificial breeding cows and calves with low BW, that you may consider selling.
