Future of MINDA

Making your data work harder for you.

In today’s farming environment, being able to access the information you need, when you need it, is critical to your farm’s productivity and profitability.

Keeping our farmers and co-op ahead of the game means having the right technology to make your life easier and give you the ability to make faster, more informed decisions on-farm.

One of the strengths of our co-op has always been our collective ability to use data to drive improvements in genetic gain and farm performance. But data is only half of the story. More importantly, it’s about the insights we can capture from that and how you use these on farm.

We’ve been in the business of data collection for more than 30 years, when MINDA was first introduced in the 1980s. Back then, farmers would send us hand written animal details by post, for us to type and post reports back a few weeks later.

Fast forward to 2019 and we have more than one billion pieces of dairy herd data in the cloud – putting your data in the palm of your hand.

But we know we need to do more to make your data work harder for you, and we need to move faster.

That’s why we’ve been working really hard to transform our technology, modernise our systems and move all data to the cloud. And this work is paying off, speeding up genomic analysis in our breeding programmes and unlocking new opportunities to deliver more insights in MINDA LIVE.

We have plenty of exciting, new features and insights in the pipeline for MINDA LIVE too, which we expect will increase uptake more. Updates being worked on now are from a combination of our digital transformation work, farmer feedback and essential improvements to further address performance during the busy times.

The majority of our farmers are now reaping the benefits of this investment in MINDA LIVE. Usage has grown significantly over the last three seasons, and as a result of this, MINDApro syncs have significantly decreased. During the recent spring calving period, more than 70% of our farmers were recording events into MINDA LIVE and the app.

At 17 years old, MINDApro is very old, outdated technology and it is costly for us to maintain. So just like we said goodbye to the paper-based service many years ago, and then MINDA Link too, we will retire MINDApro on 1 June 2022.

This is a while away, but we understand it can be difficult to contemplate moving away from something you know and trust like MINDApro. We want to give those who haven’t already made the switch plenty of time to transition.

We will continue to support the MINDApro system until 1 June 2022, but to help cover the cost of running multiple systems, there will be a small price increase for those who choose to continue to use MINDApro from February 2020 (additional 4 cents per animal, per month*).

To avoid this additional cost make the switch to MINDA LIVE now.

*This will appear on LIC invoices from 1 February 2020 as a monthly ‘MINDApro fee’ if MINDApro has been synchronised during the billing period.

We have a range of resources to help you with MINDA LIVE and we’ll be rolling out more free training sessions nationwide.

These sessions have been very popular in previous years, helping farmers get more familiar with animal recording in MINDA LIVE and how it can help you get more from your data.

More information about training will be released in early 2020.
