Useful Groups - MINDApro

One of the best features of  MINDA software is the ability to create Groups of animals within a herd. There are several must have groups of animals included when you install the software for the first time, including the Whole Herd, the Numbered Animals, the Unnumbered Animals and Males.

Groups are handy to identify animals and to simplify your herd recording tasks. To record an event (say a health treatment) for all of the animals in a group, you can drag and drop the entire group into the appropriate Wizard. In MINDApro, you can also produce a range of reports that only include a specific group. Here are some examples of useful groups you could create:

›› AGE GROUPS

MINDA software allows you to categorise animals by age. You can create various groups of animals, depending on which age groupings you want to identify. Age groups are particularly useful in MINDApro - you can produce reports for the specific age groups you have made.

eg. Three Year Old animals (Age equals 3)

›› CALVING MOBS

Many farms are managed in a split herd situation with an autumn calving and spring calving groups. You can create mobs of animals based on calving dates, allowing you to better manage split herd situations.

eg. Autumn Calving Group (Calving Date is between 20/02/2002 and 10/05/2002)

    and

›› EMPTY COWS

Create an Empty Cows group to identify the empty cows in the herd.

eg. Empty Cows (Reproductive Status equals Empty)

›› PEDIGREE ANIMALS

To view all of the pedigree animals in the herd, create a Pedigree group. With MINDApro, you can then produce reports that include only the Pedigree animals in your herd.

eg. Pedigree Animals Pedigree equals True)

›› LEASED COWS

If you lease a number of animals temporarily from another farmer, you could potentially create a Leased Cows group of animals that started in your herd on a certain date. When its time to return the leased cows to their owner, you could drag and drop the entire group onto the Remove from the Herd Wizard, to complete the removals for all of the leased cows in one step!

eg. Leased Cows (Start Date equals 10/05/2002)

NOTE: In this example, you would specify the date that the Leased Cows entered the herd. If other animals entered the herd on the same date, a Leased Cows group will not be appropriate.

›› BREEDING WORTH / INDEX GROUPS

When a herd is upgraded to MINDApro, animal indexes are downloaded from the national database after each synchronisation. You can create groups based on each index (eg. Breeding Worth or Production Worth) and set any threshold you like.
eg. High Breeding Worth Animals (Breeding Worth is greater than or equal to 110)

›› THIS SEASON'S CLINICAL MASTITIS CASES

You can create a group based on more than one rule. Perhaps you want to create a group of all the animals with a recent health condition diagnosis. This is possible if you create a rule based on the type of health condition, and another rule based on the date the condition was diagnosed.

eg. Clinical Mastitis Cases this Season
FIRST RULE: Health Condition equals Mastitis - Clinical

SECOND RULE: Health Event Date is greater than or equal to the Start of the current season.

›› LATE CALVERS

Cows that calve late in the calving season can negatively impact on the productivity of the herd. These cows are often identified as potential animals to be culled. You can create a group of Late Calvers to quickly identify these animals.

eg. Late Calvers Group (Calving Date is greater than or equal to 01/09/2002)

›› BEST PRODUCERS IN THE HERD

Herd owners and farm managers often want to identify the best (or worst) producing animals from their herd test results. With MINDApro, you can create groups based on a variety of herd test results including Milksolids. You can then create a report including only that group of animals.

eg. Best Producers in the Herd (Cows with over 1.7Kg Milksolids recorded in any herd test this month)
FIRST RULE: Herd Test Milksolids Kg is greater than or equal to 1.7Kg

To limit the number of Herd tests that are checked, you can create a second rule, based on the herd test date.

OPTIONAL SECOND RULE: Herd Test Date is greater than or equal to the Start of the current month.

›› PROBLEM COWS WITH HIGH SOMATIC CELL COUNTS

Managing and treating animals with high somatic cell count levels is crucial to protect the farm's bottom line. MINDApro makes it easy to identify and manage these animals. Just create a group like the one below. You can then create a report including only the High Somatic Cell Count group of animals, or select them to apply a mastitis treatment.

eg. High Somatic Cell Count Animals (Cows with over 500 ('000) Somatic Cells recorded in any herd test this month)
FIRST RULE: Herd Test SCC is greater than or equal to 500 ('000 cells)

To limit the number of Herd tests that are checked, you can create a second rule, based on the herd test date.

OPTIONAL SECOND RULE: Herd Test Date is greater than or equal to the Start of the current month.
