Ben and Stacey Watson run a 1250-cow farm on tough, rolling, land toward the west coast in north King Country.
The operation is predominantly once-a-day; however, with pasture typically flourishing through November and December, 500-600 animals will milk twice-a-day through the spring and early summer. The Watson’s herd BW/PW is in the country’s top-5%, and last year the couple became LIC Sire Proving Scheme farmers.
Over recent years, Ben has become “a big fan” of LIC’s SGL Dairy solution because of the “remarkable strides LIC has made with the product.” “It’s a really great product that gives farmers good options, depending on their system,” Ben says. Farmers can really do something with that because it represents up to 10 days on the ground.”
The product is an ideal market response to the new induction laws implemented this year, Ben says. “The beauty of SGL (Dairy) is that it now sucks cows back into your calving window, or it can be used primarily to get more days in milk and a more compact calving. Either way, it’s brilliant.” Last season Ben was especially impressed with what he was able to achieve at tailoff time (see email below)
