NAIT Official Position on RFID Tags for Cattle & Deer

The Government's National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) group have released the approved tagging requirements for mandatory traceability.

Click here for our Q&A on the NAIT tagging requirements and deferral of the mandatory date.

Click here for Information Sheet that LIC have put together to advise farmers on how these tagging and recording requirements may affect you.

Click here for further information about NAIT.

LIC appreciate that NAIT’s requirement of mandatory ID for cattle in 2012 could impact on tag orders you have or intend to make. Please select your preferred Official Secondary tags carefully as LIC is unable to extend a credit for tags that have been manufactured to specification.

NAIT Scheme Cost Recovery Consultation

Farmers and lifestylers who manage cattle and deer have the opportunity to say what they think about the proposed levy system to fund the National Animal Identification and Tracing (NAIT) scheme, set to start on 1 July next year (2012) for cattle.  Deer join the scheme in March 2013.

NAIT Limited, the industry-owned company responsible for setting up the scheme, is seeking submissions on proposed levy amounts and how they are collected.

The key points to note are:

  • NAIT have proposed a levy of $1.10 be added to the sale of every EID tag
  • The levy would apply to all orders of EID tags with a required on farm (ROF) date of 1 January or beyond
  • Although the levy is NAIT imposed, LIC as a tag administrator will be required to collect it on behalf of NAIT
  • The cost of the levy is likely to change year to year but remain in excess of $1 per EID tag
  • During the development of the NAIT scheme, capital costs have been covered by the crown
  • Going forward NAIT will be required to recover costs through levies
  • NAIT is an industry owned organisation, of which industry partners include DairyNZ, Dairy Companies Association of New Zealand, Beef & Lamb New Zealand, Meat Industry Association, Federated Farmers of New Zealand, and Deer Industry NZ
  • Organisations and individuals are invited to make a submission on the proposal to NAIT.
  • Submissions are due by 5pm, 23 December 2011 - full details are outlined on pg 5 of the attached document

Visit the NAIT website to read the consultation document and make a submission. (http://www.nait.co.nz/news-and-publications/nait-scheme-cost-recovery-consultation/) Consultation closes 5pm 23 December 2011.
