Information for G1 Customers & Breeders

What GeneMark Can Do:

  • Provide the customer with a duplicate DNA certificate, which shows the ISAG markers of the G1 profiled animal.
    • The customer can choose to take that certificate to GenomNZ (http://www.genomnz.co.nz/), or other parentage providers who are alternative parentage testing companies that can perform G1 parentage verifying against progeny.
    • Please refer to ‘Sample Types’ to get an understanding of their preferred sampling methods.
    • The customer can take Zeetags tissue samples to GenomNZ. You can no longer purchase the Zeetags tissue punches.

ISAG (International Society for Animal Genetics) markers have been used by cattle breeding societies for some time. GeneMark refers to this genotyping technology as G1. Since GeneMark developed it's own in-house genotyping technology (referred to as G3), ISAG markers have shown themselves to be less reliable by comparison, especially as time passes. This is why GeneMark made the decision to move away from ISAG markers because GeneMark could not in good conscience continue to offer a technology that was known to be far less powerful. The reason why G1 profile types are not compatible with those of G3 is because they are based on two entirely different types of genetic information.

  • To test for BVD and A2, you need to take a separate tissue sample.
  • If GeneMark has profiled an animal it will show on MINDA Pro with the GeneMark platform type. If it has been profiled through another company however, the GeneMark platform type will not appear.

 

 

  • Once all historic G1 matching has been completed, we are able to provide Whole Herd or Individual Animal Parentage Verification however a new sample will need to be provided on the animals to generate a G3 profile.
  • We are still able to generate DNA certificate’s for registration however these do not display the ISAG markers.

What GeneMark Can Not Do:

  • We cannot supply Allflex tissue punches for the customer to take to GenomNZ. We only supply these punches to customers supplying samples for testing to GeneMark.
  • We do not sell or supply Zeetags tissue punches.
  • We cannot use any profiles or samples from GenomNZ.
  • We cannot complete any parentage testing for G1 profiles obtained from overseas DNA testing facilities.
  • We do not process blood blotting paper like GenomNZ

 

Breeders:

  • GeneMark CAN produce a profile of an animal from a defrosted semen straw. This straw must be intact and full.
  • GeneMark cannot process hair for any type of testing.
  • If the customer is not an LIC customer, we cannot upload profiles to MINDA, however we can upload Parentage results to the National Database at a cost to the client
